In studying Art Nouveau, I found there weren’t any works with women of color. This disturbed me to the point of tears, being African American. I continued to study Alphonse Mucha who is best known for the Art Nouveau style. I found that many of his models (except for Sarah Bernhardt) seemed to have the same build and stoic expression. In reading his autobiography it stated he had a muse while residing in France. She was a black woman whose image was the same of the many works he had done. It is unfortunate that he had to change her skin color for the purpose of sales.
